ACADEMICS
Accreditation and Membership
St. Mary’s Preparatory is fully accredited and licensed by the State of Michigan’s Department of Education, the Michigan Non-Public Schools Accrediting Association (MNSAA), and is a proud and upstanding member of the Orchard Lake Schools, the Archdiocese of Detroit, the Detroit Catholic League Office of Athletics, the Oakland Schools Consortium, and the Michigan High School Athletic Association.
Academic Support and Communication
St. Mary’s is built upon the idea that education should occur in a friendly but disciplined environment, stressing dialogue over lecture, supporting families and their values, and establishing roots in the Catholic faith. One of the great strengths of the St. Mary’s academic program is the amount of support offered to students, which is developed through communication with the family. The Academic Deans coordinate this effort and report directly to the Headmaster on a daily basis. The Academic Deans are responsible for assisting students with academic difficulties and addressing the concerns of parents. They monitor all students’ grades in conjunction with listening and acting on the input of teachers. The Academic Deans direct the peer-tutoring program, organize a system of weekly progress reports. The school also offers free ACT preparation classes to interested students. In addition, they are responsible for all scheduling and are available for consultation regarding course selection.
The four full-time Academic Deans and two full-time counselors assist all students and are especially helpful to juniors and seniors during their college discernment process. The counselors help students to research and apply to colleges, and they conduct and coordinate standardized testing of all students. The school’s Dean of Discipline and Dean of Students are responsible for all discipline and attendance issues and for coordinating the efforts of the entire faculty and staff to deal with personal issues that arise with students. St. Mary’s attempts to work closely with parents to make sure that their sons are both happy and successful.
Academic Program/Curriculum
St. Mary’s academic program is designed to meet the entrance requirements for any college curriculum. In addition to the required courses, students, parents, and the Academic Deans work together to determine an appropriate elective schedule. St. Mary’s encourages students to create a program that addresses their individual interests and needs. Requirements for graduation are: four years of theology and English; three years of mathematics, science (to include one year of Chemistry) social studies, and foreign language; and a semester each of computer programming, computer applications, physical education, health, fine arts, and speech. Students are required to fulfill 28 credits for graduation, and young men who transfer to St. Mary’s from another school will meet with the Academic Deans to determine which grades will transfer and which requirements need to be completed.
