Academic Seminar/Referral

The Academic Seminar/Referral program is in place to help students reach their full academic potential.  The program creates an atmosphere that allows students to study with few distractions and provides supervision to ensure that they stay on task.  National Honor Society members are frequently on hand to offer peer tutoring.  Any student may utilize the program as he wishes.  In some cases a student may be “referred” to the program by a teacher to complete a missing assignment or test.  Parents may also require that their son attend the program. The program is held Monday through Thursday immediately after school and lasts about one hour.  The program is conducted/supervised by an Academic Dean.

The Grading System

The scholastic year is divided into two semesters and each semester into three marking periods.  Report cards are issued six times per academic year, at six-week intervals.  Parents are advised of grades through report cards that are mailed (or e-mailed/on-line) to the home.  Deficiency notices are mailed (or e-mailed/on-line) to parents/guardians midway through each marking period when students are in danger of failing a given course for that marking period.

The grading scale used at St. Mary’s ranges from A+ to E.  Passing grades are A+ to D-, which corresponds with a 4.0 scale, ranging 4.3 to .7, and a percentage scale from 100 to 70 percent.  Semester grades are determined by weighing each of the three marking period grades at 25% (75% total) and the semester final exam (25%).  Only final semester grades are entered onto the student’s permanent record and transcripts (semester grades are based on 4.0 scale not percentages).

St. Mary’s grading scale is as follows:

                                                A+       4.3       100%   -99%
                                                A         4.0       98%     -95%
