ACADEMIC DEPARTMENTS AND COURSE OFFERINGS
DEPARTMENT OF THEOLOGY
Foundations in Catholicism req 9 2 sem
This course explores the foundations of Roman Catholicism in Jesus, John the Baptist, St. Peter, and the Apostles, and it follows the history of the church through today. The course focus is on the mission of Jesus and His enduring impact on past, present, and future societies. Students are immersed in the biblical text as they search for meaning, truth, and salvation.
Sacred Scriptures req 10 2 sem
In the sophomore year at St. Mary’s, students begin an intensive approach to and study of the scripture passages that comprise the Hebrew Scriptures and Christian Testament of the Bible. In the Catholic tradition, the link between the Testaments is explored, and students are offered opportunities for service and study to carry forth the message of Jesus and share His love with others.
Applications in Ethics req 11 2 sem
In the 11th grade, St. Mary’s students begin the study of ethics and the application of morality to private and social settings. The platform used is generally the Gospels, specifically the parables of Jesus Christ; situational ethics are discussed in terms of professional, social, and governmental settings. Students continue their spiritual development their junior year as they build their faith and develop their moral maturity via service to the poor and needy.
World Religions req 12 2 sem
As a senior, the St. Mary’s student studies the major religious movements and religions of the world from a historical prospective in an effort at synthesis and understanding of similarities and differences in the philosophies of these various beliefs. The completion of community service is a graduation requirement at St. Mary’s and is administered through the Theology department in the senior year.
