All foreign language courses place an emphasis on the four major language-based skills: listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing.  Cultural lessons are included to provide a basis for better understanding and mastery of the linguistic properties of each specific language. Placement into the next year/level is based on the approval of the student’s current instructor in foreign language.

DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SCIENCES AND HISTORY

Western Civilization                                        req 10                                                              2 sem

This survey course, which focuses on the development of our western culture, examines the chronological  progress of humankind from its earliest societies through the imperialism of the late 1800’s.  Modern institutions and values are used to compare and contrast the cultures of the past, which are studied in this full year course required of all sophomores.

Honors Western Civilization                           req 10                                                              2 sem

A progressive, accelerated, and more intensive version of the Western Civilization course outlined above.

U.S. History                                                    req 11                                                              2 sem

This full-year course examines the historical rise of the United States from its 15th Century beginnings to its status today as the world’s last great superpowers.  Lectures, discussions, and reading occupy most of the time in this traditional history course.

(AP) U.S. History                                            el. 11, 12                                                         2 sem

A progressive, accelerated, and more intensive version of the American history course that  prepares students to take the AP examination over U.S. History in the spring.

United States History: 1945 to Present           el. 11, 12                                                         2 sem

This full-year course offers students the opportunity to more fully study and analyze a period in U.S. history that received little coverage in the traditional U.S. history class due to time constraints.  Students will study the domestic and foreign events that have shaped the United States since the close of World War II.  Areas of focus include, but are not limited to: the Cold War, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, the domestic policy of presidents Kennedy and Johnson, the Persian Gulf War, and the war on terrorism.
