EXTRACURRICULAR OPPORTUNITIES
Athletic, Academic, and Spiritual Opportunities
The belief held by St. Mary’s is students must develop themselves in a well-rounded manner. With that in mind, extracurricular sports and activities are added regularly to complement the required academic program. The school offers award-winning forensics, debate, and art programs, as well as vocal and instrumental music programs activities.
ATHLETIC OPPORTUNITES
Athletics
St. Mary’s offers freshman and/or junior varsity, and varsity sports in football, baseball, soccer, basketball, cross-country, golf, hockey, lacrosse, rowing, skiing, track, and wrestling. Winning is part of the St. Mary’s tradition. A great many St. Mary’s students participate in athletics, and while students are not required to participate, all are encouraged to become involved. The philosophy of St. Mary’s is that athletics and extracurricular activities are key components in creating brotherhood and in educating well-rounded students. St. Mary’s has a role for both the gifted athlete and the first-time participant.
St. Mary’s extensive athletic facilities include two gymnasiums, an ice arena, indoor track and rowing facility, a crew house, a weight room, two football fields, two baseball diamonds, an outdoor track, lacrosse and soccer fields, and many outdoor basketball courts as well as the lake itself (Orchard Lake), which is often used for swimming, wind surfing, fishing, ice skating, and cross-country skiing. Various intramural sports are offered throughout the school year, and all students are encouraged to participate.
Athletics and Varsity Jackets
Students-Athletes who have earned their Varsity Letter may purchase a St. Mary’s Varsity jacket through Art Knitting Mills. The Administration has outlined protocol for jackets with the management at Art Knitting Mills; these policies and rules and regulations are to be honored to maintain the standards of sportsmanship as outlined by the MHSAA and the Detroit Catholic League Office of Athletics. The Athletic Director is responsible for all decisions – in conjunction with the Headmaster and Administration – regarding all athletic and sports-related school business. For information and ordering procedure, please call the Assistant Athletic Director, Robin Goddard, at (248) 361-8726.
Athletic Eligibility
Attendance at all games, practices, and team-related events is a requirement to be a student-athlete at St. Mary’s Prep. Parents are asked NOT to plan vacations during the entire athletic season in which their son is a participant; this includes traditional holiday breaks (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter/Spring Break, etc.). Students who miss practice or exhibit poor attendance may be held out of forthcoming competitions at the discretion of their coach or may be removed from that team by the Athletic Director and Headmaster.
The policies for academic eligibility at St. Mary’s Preparatory are stricter than those used by the MHSAA and the Detroit Catholic League. Each student athlete’s eligibility is reviewed by the Academic Dean, Athletic Director, and Headmaster every three weeks with the arrival of deficiencies and report cards. Students not meeting academic expectations can and will be removed from tryouts, practices, games, and teams if substantial academic improvements are not in line with the Academic Dean’s Recovery Plan.
