Physics Olympiad
Physics Olympiad is an after school activity open to current and past Physics students (both Regular and AP) designed to prepare the students for the U of M event. The Olympiad is an annual event held in May, organized and conducted by the Department of Physics, at the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor campus. High school teams from Michigan compete. The Olympiad consists of six physics events or competitions, which typically involve both a written quiz and an experiment or activity that tests the students’ knowledge of various physics topics. At the conclusion of the Olympiad, is a Physics Quiz Bowl. A series of fifteen to twenty “simple” physics demonstrations will be posed for the teams to consider. Each team will then come to a consensus answer. Answers for each question will be provided by watching the demonstration take place. First, Second, and Third places are awarded for each event, as well as an overall Olympiad winner once all scores are tallied.
CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS
Band and Choir
Band and Choir are both semester and full-year courses at St. Mary’s Preparatory. Students who participate in either or both of these activities not only earn humanities credits toward graduation but can also earn their varsity letter. Both Band and Choir will allow students to perform numerous school and outside functions during the calendar year.
Chess
The chess club is open to players of all ability levels. The club usually meets once a week to hold matches. In the early spring, members of the club participate in an internal tournament to determine who the strongest chess player truly is.
The Key Club
Key Club is an extracurricular activity that offers the students of St. Mary’s the opportunity to participate in community service projects. The focus of Key Club, which is a facet of the Kiwanis organization, is to help those in need. The students in Key Club elect officers and take an active role in initiating service projects. The Theology Department Chair is our Key Club Moderator.
National Honor Society
The National Honor Society is an organization that allows students who qualify to become part of an elite group of scholars that maintain the highest levels in academics, character, leadership, and achievement. In the spring of each year, those students who qualify with a 3.7 G.P.A. or higher are asked to apply and submit a cover letter and resume. An established N.H.S. committee comprised of administrators, faculty, and staff of O.L.S.M. read these submissions and assess each student’s potential and deservedness to be in the organization. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors may re-apply each year if they are not accepted on their previous attempt. N.H.S. is an active club that elects officers and is involved in many campus service projects, such as tutoring other students. Students who fail to maintain the requisite G.P.A. are removed from the N.H.S. Those students who are members of the N.H.S. will wear a blue sash as part of their graduation attire. Any N.H.S. member who commits an Honor Code violation may be removed from N.H.S. or be relieved of their office.
