Robotics
The Robotics program at St. Mary’s participates in the Oakland County Competitive Robotics Association (OCCRA) during the first semester. OCCRA is an association of Oakland County high school teams that have joined together to form a league where student designed and built 125 pound robots compete against each other in a sports-like game.
OCCRA was formed in 2000 to generate interest and enthusiasm for technical and academic disciplines, such as design, engineering, physics, and electronics. OCCRA is a way to recognize and encourage students who devote their energies to these areas of study. The main objective of this program is to introduce the students to Engineering by promoting: a) problem solving, b) mechanical, electrical and pneumatic systems, and c) teamwork. The program consists of both class work and after school commitments by the students.
S.A.D.D.
The St. Mary’s S.A.D.D. is a club that promotes the idea of young men working together and making sound decisions. S.A.D.D. does community outreach with school children to promote peer resistance techniques. They meet with fifth graders in an attempt to help them with peer pressure they are likely to face beginning in middle school. S.A.D.D. has also facilitated school-wide assemblies with speakers who have presented our students with life lessons from outside of the classroom.
Student Council
The OLSM Student Council is a group of student representatives consisting of eight Executive Officers who are elected by the student body and of representatives elected by each individual class.
The purpose of the Student Council is to promote a better understanding and cooperation among students, faculty, and administration and to provide a responsible voice for students in planning and carrying out activities that affect them, their needs, and their school spirit.
The OLSM Student Council is also in charge of the Homecoming Dance and Spirit Week activities, which include fundraisers and food drives, as well as organizing individual class competitions. Students are encouraged to submit their ideas and objectives, which are voted upon and/or implements with the help of the Student Council, staff, and administration. Recently the students have also initiated new bowling and chess clubs and an intramural basketball league, among various other activities, that encourage student involvement and school spirit.
Tennis
Open to all students, the tennis club offers students another opportunity to interact with classmates in a semi-competitive environment. Students will compete in matches, as well as hone their individual skills. The club also conducts matches against other schools and organizations.
