FORMAL EVENTS
Homecoming Dance
The Homecoming Dance occurs the evening of the Homecoming football game and is usually held on campus with a standing invitation to all students and their dates for the evening. The dress is semi-formal (jacket and tie) and the proceeds go to benefit the activities of the Student Council. The faculty and Administration chaperone the event. Permission slips are required of each student and his date to ensure that proper decorum is maintained, guest students are in good standing at their schools, and an emergency contact number is available.
Father and Son Luncheon
The purpose of this casual gathering is to unite fathers, sons, male siblings, and other significant role models and celebrate their relationship with a Sunday Mass and lunch. A raffle is held during this event, and all proceeds benefit the O.L.S.M. athletic department. Each year a guest speaker is invited to deliver the afternoon’s address.
Informal Dances
The Student Council organizes dances as an opportunity for our students to meet and interact with female students from other local schools in a safe, secure, and chaperoned environment.
Mother-Son Dance
The Mother-Son Dance is usually scheduled for the closest Sunday to Valentines Day. We invite all our boys to invite their “best girl” (Mom, of course) out for an evening of fun, good food, and dancing. It is a relatively new tradition here at St. Mary’s but one that will endure throughout our future. We encourage mothers and sons to respond quickly to the R.S.V.P. once you receive the invitation because space is often limited.
Prom
Junior/Senior Prom is held each year in late April or early May on a Thursday night (date set by the Headmaster and the Athletic Director). Those upperclassmen and their dates that attend the Prom are reminded of the commitment to the Honor Code so that their behavior during and after the Prom fulfills all the expectations of a St. Mary’s man. The boys are required to wear tuxedos or appropriate suits, and the girls are to be dressed in formal attire. Permission slips are required of each student and his date to ensure that proper decorum is maintained, guest students are in good standing at their schools, and an emergency contact number is available. The Prom is chaperoned by the Faculty and Administration.
Ring Day
Ring Day is another age-old tradition at St. Mary’s Preparatory and typically occurs on campus in early fall. Ring Day is the special ceremony when juniors receive their class rings (or ring of their choice), which are blessed by the Chancellor and placed on their finger as a symbol of loyalty and passage. It begins with Mass, which is then followed by a luncheon for the juniors, faculty, parents, and guests. After the ceremony, the junior class is officially considered “upperclassmen.” To achieve the solemnity and importance that this occasion carries, the men of the junior class are fitted for and wear identical tuxedos.
