High School Placement Test
The Catholic High School Placement Test (HSPT) is a comprehensive placement test written for eighth-graders. This exam is used by every Catholic high school in the Archdiocese of Detroit. The test is offered four times during the school year and is a requirement for acceptance to Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Preparatory.
Primary purposes for the HSPT include:
Acceptance Decision (we do not have a required score for acceptance. Students are evaluated based on a holistic approach).
Placement into 9th-grade classes
Scholarship determination (students who score at least an 80 on the exam will qualify for an academic scholarship). More information on scholarships can be found on our Tuition page

*The December HSPT exam offers testing accommodations to students who qualify on a current documented, and supported IEP, 504, or school accommodation plan. If your child is on one of these plans, please contact our Dean of Admissions, Candace Castiglione, to discuss your student. There is necessary paperwork to be completed prior to test that we will provide to you upon your conversation.
Walk in registrations on the morning of the test welcome!
November/December Testing Day Information:
Enter the campus through the St. Mary’s Admissions Center parking lot located just off of Commerce Rd. This is a separate entrance from the main campus entrance. Heading north on Commerce Rd., the Admissions Center will be on your left hand side just past the main campus entrance. Heading South on Commerce Rd., the entrance will be on your right before the main campus entrance. Look for the red sign at the entrance that says “testing center”. Once you pull into the Admissions Center drive, make an immediate right at the long parking lot there. The building you see on the left hand side is the CAC and is where the HSPT test will take place. Red “testing center” signs will be at the front of the entrance. Park in this lot and bring your child into the center.
Enter the campus from Indian Trail. Once on campus, the Science Center will be the very first building on the right hand side. There is parking just past adjacent to the library. You may drop your child off, or walk them in, whatever you prefer is fine. Directly across from the Science Center, you will see the St. Mary's Preparatory Building.
